Using the momentous occasion of her Platinum Jubilee, British Queen Elizabeth II reimagined the monarchy’s destiny, stating that when Charles becomes King, the Duchess of Cornwall will be recognised as Queen Camilla.
“When, in due course, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service,” Queen Elizabeth II said in a message on the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne.
“The 6th of February celebrates the 70th anniversary of my accession to the presidency in 1952. It is a day that I remember as much for the death of my father, King George VI, as for the beginning of my reign, even after 70 years “Queen Elizabeth II remarked.
The British Queen would be required to consult her direct heirs Charles and William before making such a major pronouncement regarding titles, implying that they both approved and believed the British people were ready to accept Camilla as Queen.
Despite having a claim to the title of Queen, when Charles married Camilla in 2005, the couple stated that she would be known as “Princess Consort.” It was interpreted as an awareness of the sensitivity surrounding a title slated for Diana, Charles’ first wife.
