In a 1-0 victory over Iraq, Iran became the first country from Asia to qualify for the upcoming world cup to be held in Qatar in 2022. It was FC Porto’s forward Medhi trahemi who gave the lead to his country at the 48th minute at the Azadi stadium in Tehran. Iran has now cemented its position in group A with 19 points two points ahead of second-placed South Korea.
South Korea is next in line to qualify after a 1-0 win over Lebanon in Sidon but they remain without their key striker Son Heung-min of Tottenham hotspur who is out injured.
Japan who are in group B also inched closer to Doha with a 2-0 win over second-placed china, two points behind group leaders Saudi Arabia.
Australia is placed in third place with a 4-0 win over Vietnam in Melbourne and remains in the hunt to qualify for the world cup.
